After Istanbul and Florence, Athens is the 3rd destination I would recommend for a spring getaway.
Eternal, full of history, but also full of life and interesting things to do!
The first thing we did in Athens, was visiting the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Yes, the ancient theater part of the Acropolis.
But why visit it in daylight with all the other tourists, when you can enter it at night and get to sit on its ancient steps while listening to Opera?
I browsed the Athens & Epidaurus Festival’s webpage before leaving, and booked ourselves 2 seats for something like 30,00 EUR in one of the cheapest tiers.
The Opera Festival is very heart felt in Athens, and we were surrounded by greek classy men and well dressed women in sparkling sandals with no sight of tourists whatsoever.
Getting to experience it this way was spectacular!
The lighted Acropolis stood over us while we enjoyed the play, and I felt truly as an ancient greek princess living in Greece thousands of years ago.
The play we saw was Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, and to be honest I didn’t enjoy it very much. After the terrible trip we were exhausted, and it was sung in german with greek text – a bit challenging after 26 hours without sleep…
But as said, the venue was fantastic, so this is absolutely a thing I would totally recommend while in Athens!
Beside operas, many artists are recorded to have played at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, such as Maria Callas, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Elton John among many others.
