THE BERGEN RAILWAY: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RAILWAY IN THE WORLD?

19 Mar THE BERGEN RAILWAY: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RAILWAY IN THE WORLD?

NORWAY BY TRAIN NSB-3

That’s how I first heard of the Bergen Railway, the norwegian railway connecting Oslo to Bergen: for its reputation of being one of the most beautiful railways in the world.

This year, when I finally went exploring Norway, I couldn’t help but including the Bergen Railway in the itinerary, and make a dream come true!

Is the Bergen Railway really so beautiful?

Six hours of fjords, endless white landscapes and a stretch of tunnels that will leave you speechless every single time the tunnel ends and the view opens on every time a more beautiful scenery.

The Finse station, on the Bergen Railway, is the highest point on the Norwegian Railway.

But not only! Its surrounding also served as a location for the shooting of the ice planet Hoth in Star Wars V!

If the Bergen Railway is spectacular during wintertime, during summertime it turns into the Fjords’ Getaway, and contain yet another surprise: the Flåm Railway.

The Flåm Railway develops from the Bergen Railway at Myrdal Station, and connects it to the sea, thus to the Sognefjord, the longest fjord in Norway.

Also in this case, the destination is as exciting as the journey: the Flåm Railway is a turistic and incredibly beautiful train journey that will bring you throughout amazing views and waterfalls, and it’s the steepest standard-gauge railway in Europe, with a gradient that reaches the 5,5 %.

Needless to say, the Flåm Railway is my next Norwegian dream :)

And at the end of the Bergen Railway there’s Bergen obviously! A maze of roofs and little alleys, developing around the postcard-looking harbor that enchants travelers since a long time ..

But we’ll speak of Bergen another day! Here’s the Bergen Railway, as seen in a white March!

What do you say?

Is it really that beautiful?

Wow! I didn’t even realise there was a railway link between Bergen and Oslo!

I’m hoping to go to Bergen this year so I’ll be sure to fly to Oslo and then jump on the train to Bergen.

    Cheers for the great tip!

Yap Ed! Didn’t know that either, and when I finally heard of it, I couldn’t resist but to test it! :)
Let me know if you use it to get to Bergen, would love to hear your insights!! :)
