05 Jan UNEXPECTED BEAUTIFUL POZNAN

POZNAN WHAT TO SEE WHAT TO DO-285

Poland for me has been the biggest surprise of 2014.

Have you ever been to Poland?

For some reason, I expected it grey, post-sovietic, and depressing.

Instead, I was welcomed by a lively and modern city, Poznan, full of life, youth, things to do and see and opportunities.

Poznan is the city where students come to study and then move to, it’s a city with a strong economy, still managed by the most powerful citizens not by corporations, it’s a city that give much importance to culture, around which social life develops.

Did you know that Poland, modern and trendy, is one of the few countries on Europe with a thriving economy and with the lowest unemployment rate, despite the crisis?

I was pleasantly surprised, and sure noticed that in Poznan.

There’s another fact worth to be shared about Poznan: it’s as beautiful as it is cheap. The best hotels, activities, and nightlife can be found at very competitive prices, thing that attracts much tourism from the close Germany but not only, connected to the world of shopping, conventions and wellness.

My few days in Poznan went quickly, spent with Carolina, Jacek, Wojtek, the guys from the City Promotion Office that took me around showing me every corner of their pretty town sharing every single curiosity as open books and with contagious enthusiasm – and that I can’t wait to share with you!

In this post I’d like to share with you some of my dearest pictures of Poznan, but I’ll soon be posting some more practical posts to discover together this beautiful town that stole my heart!

It’s an innovative and fun way to discover the city,

it’s the croissant museum!

With that name it’s already appealing, but the hilarious show will surprise you even more!

My city! Thank You for such a good opinion about this city :) we know that Gdańsk, Wrocław and Kraków are known as the most beautiful cities (and the biggiest too) but in my opinion Poznań can be on this list too! A lot of people doesn’t like their cities but I don’t know the person from Poznań, who don’t love this city! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed about rest of our country! It’s not gray! It’s full of beautiful places, people, nature, architecture, museum etc!

Hi, nice to here that you’ve had fun in Poznań. Autumn is the worst time to visit our city, you should see the city in spring and summer. People after the cold long winter are hungry for going out and the nightlife flourishes :) Bars at the river, gardens in the Old market – it is recommended to take part in it 😉
    Best regards from Poznań

Gorgeous photos of a gorgeous city Pam! So pleased to hear that Poland left such a deep impression on you. I also had similar preconceptions before visiting Poznan and other Polish cities, and then had the exact same reaction as you when I realised how wrong I was! I love how you have captured the food scene in this post too, so chic and stylish.

Thanks so much Shing! So nice to hear that we share the same feelings! Actually the food scene is one of the things that surprised me the most, I can certainly say that Poznan has among the most chic and stylish places I’ve ever eaten at, with nothing to envy to cities such London, New York and Paris! Did you also find it so?

Ada why you lying? Poznań is bigger than Gdansk and Breslau (wroclaw). Don’t trust wiki.
Agglomeration Poznań is two times greater than Wroclaw.

I think that in fusty country…

I think you are right Heter, the preconception we grow up with are awful and stupid, and this is one of the main reasons I love to travel: you discover the real places, and more often than not you find that all preconceptions are absolutely wrong! Thanks for commenting :)

You should obligatory visit Kraków 😉 It’s one of the most beautiful cities with a unique atmosphere and a lot of magic places to see :) Polish people are really hospitable, so they will surely make you welcome here again 😉

    Well hello Pam :)
I also came across your post by facebook and I’m overjoyed you found Poznań a beautiful city. I live here for 9 years now and I fell in love with the city. I agree that the most enticing and interesting time to visit Poznań is in the spring or in the summer. It becomes an unbelivable place; it actually feels magical.
It makes me sad that people think of Poland as some kind of wild, retarted country that actually belongs more to the long gone Soviet Union than to Europe, but I believe there’s little we can do, other than promote our country, that ‘drowns’ in history…
Well, thank you for this post. Best wishes, and enjoy your travels! :)

I come from Germany and I must say our neighbour Poland has made a huge step forward during the last 20 years. It is anything but the grey depressed place that it used to be in the 80s. Back in the 80s “Polish economy” was a pejorative term in German language to express something is not working. Today nobody says this anymore since Polish growth rates have been amazing

Our daughter, born in London, went to study in Poznań 20 years ago. She came back with a degree, worked some time in London but her heart remained in Poznań. She returned there and settled there. Says that Poznań is her spot on this planet! We’ve also fallen in love with that amazing city – have you seen the “Termy” hot spring baths, where over the edge of the warm pool even on winter nights you can look down on the Malta Lake? Hi, I come from Poland and I live near Poznan. To be honest, Poznan is quite mediocre. I glad to know that foreigners want to visit this city but in my opinion definitely more interesting are Wroclaw, Torun, Gdansk and Krakow. If someone wants to see something really interesting, something mysterious should go to Lower Silesia. There you can find for example underground drifts of Riese Project, Ksiaz Castle, Czocha Castle, gold mine Zloty Stok, coal mine Nowa Ruda, uranium mine Kletno, beautiful dams on Bobr River (Pilchowice, Lesna), Fort Srebrna Gora and many other equally interesting.

Poznan is quite mediocre? nice joke mate ! Compare to other cities is one of the top just after krakow and warsaw.
Poznan have underground drifts as well at tor poznan , and not only… Poznan has more to offer than wroclaw torun and gdansk apart from krakow and warsaw.

    Greetings !

Unfortunately it’s not joke, it’s only my opinion. Sad for but true especially for people from Poznan. They often think that Poznan is the best, the most beautiful …it’s the centre of the world. But it’s not.
And no Poznan hasn’t underground drifts. I’m afraid you don’t know what it means. I assure you it has nothing to motorsports.

Let’s be honest – Poznań is not THAT pretty. You just showed the pretty side of it. It may appear cheap, but not for us (our earnings don’t allow to enjoy those cafes and restaurants without careful consideration and are dramatically low compared to Germans, French etc – 500-600 Euros a month being an average pay). Poznań is a bit sleepy when it comes to culture events and is rather badly managed. Uneployment rate is low here – that is true – but it’s very high in Poland as a whole.
    Having said that…

This city can be a pleasure to live in. A winter walk through the Old Town can really warm up your heart and in summer it’s a friendly and lively place. Bad city management did not stop hundreds of citizens – they went to set up little businesses and new meeting places pop up on daily basis. Poles are also very hospitable – it’s sort of a national trade and our huge pride.
So – don’t be afraid to visit us. We are as European as it can be – time to throw the post-communism picture to the dustbin.

    :-)

Did you grow up here? I did. And it was a painful experience in this country. I may love Poland, the culture and the beauty of the land, but to say it’s easy to live here? No, man.
I appreciate my country but it’s not a fairy tale. We’re not Western Europe yet – it’s gonna take some more years to leave the grey behind (both: in everyday life and in our minds).
