FUERTEVENTURA: THE ISLAND OF ETERNAL SPRING

Strong Winds.

Or Great Adventure.

Both names that are typically related to the name “Fuerteventura” are surely correct: loved by wind and wave surfers, Fuerteventura is the island of white calm beaches as well as great adventures of all kinds.

While escaping from a cold grey european fall, Fuerteventura greeted us with a warm wind that brings the scents of far away lands and that made palms and the bright flowers wave at us in the afternoon sun rays.

On the bus that from the airport brings you to the capital Puerto del Rosario and then to Corralejo, on the Northeasternmost corner of the island, Fuerteventura changes face, and reveals herself with moonlike landscapes on her wrinkled smile.

I can’t help but stare from the window as she smiles with not only one but several rainbows!

Fuerteventura is a perfect destination all year around, that’s why it’s also referred to as the island of the eternal spring, even though during october and november can be a bit wet, and when we visited was actually fairly cool.

Once approaching Corralejo the landscape changes once again, and surprises you with the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean, a blue that appears even deeper with the surrounding white dunes of Corralejo, a sort of a mini Sahara desert that will sweep all the way on the road to greet you as you arrive.

Our stay in Fuerteventura was a bit unusual maybe. We didn’t explore every inch of the island as one should, and we rented a car just for one day, which was barely enough for a drive on the South of the island, a quick bath and back to Corralejo.

I wanted to live the island on another point of view though: the surfer’s island was worth to be experienced on a surfer’s point of view, and that’s what I did: for a week I got up every morning, wore a wetsuit and went to play with the waves of the Ocean.

And I’m happy I did it.

I experienced the Great Adventure as seen from the sea, and I’m completely aware of the fact that I absolutely have to go back, to see those places I had to leave out, to experience those adventures I didn’t challenge and to talk to those people in the villages I couldn’t visit.

And you know something?

I can’t wait! :)
