29 Jan WINTER IN PRAGUE WITH THE SNOW

This New Year was one of the best ever.

Full of unexpected surprises, old friends and new encounters, and new experiences. Those that you wanted to try for a long time.

But above all, it was genuine.

I always travel with my camera ready in one hand and the mobile in the other, but in this trip I tried to live moments for what they are.

And I realized that it’s just the way it should be.

When you stop worrying about everything that surrounds you, when you stop planning every single moment, when you stop trying to make things happen exactly the way you want them to happen, there’s some sort of hand that guides you, and it brings you exactly where you were supposed to be.

I always wanted to visit Prague, and I always dreamt to do it with the snow.

This year I ended up in the beautiful Czech capital almost by chance.

After a great New Year’s eve with friends in Ljubljana, we decided to proceed to Prague.

We decided to use Blablacar for the first time, and had a crazy yet very funny trip, long almost eight hours!

We rented an apartment in Josefov, the charming Jewish neighbourhood full of stories and legends. One of those apartments with that decadent charme, with big windows on which you can lean on and sip a cup of tea at night peeping out.

It’s from one of those windows that I saw the snow the second day.

I got up like a kid on Christmas morning, and spent all the following days skipping around, playing with the snow, rubbing my red nose, warming each others hands, drinking hot wine but above all smiling to life.

How to dress and organise for winter in Prague

Prague is Czech republic’s capital and in winter can be very cold. Snow is not very frequent, although is not so rare either.

To have the highest chances of snow visit Prague during January and February, generally the coldest months.

You can also check the weather and leave last minute if you have the possibility: I found great options with Blablacar and by train (OBB, the Austrian railways), both options costed me the same, 40,00 EUR from Ljubljana.

How to dress:

Forget your warm UGG boot. Snow will completely dunk them and you will find yourself with wet feet. A disaster!

I use Hunter boots in snow, the infamous rubber boots, and wear a pair of warm wool socks under. This way your feet will remain warm and dry, and they are even very stylish! :)

Bring also a very warm coat (even better a down parka) with a hoodie. Beanie and gloves are a must, and if you have a pair of those gloves that work with smartphones even better, you will avoid hibernating your hand every time you want to take a picture with your phone or check the map on it!

What equipment to bring:

I normally shoot with a Canon 6D, a quite expensive camera and I must admit that in certain conditions I don’t find myself comfortable with it, even though I’m probably just paranoid ..

In bad weather conditions I use my old DSLR, a Canon 1000D, and a smartphone, way more versatile and easy to protect from snow! I recently bought an iPhone 6S, and I’m extremely satisfied by its quality!

A more informative post about Prague will follow.

For now I just wanted to share with you some of my favorite shots of the one I dare consider the most beautiful city I ever visited!

Have you ever been to Prague?
