AMALFI AND CILENTO: A ONE WEEK ITINERARY ROAD TRIP

salerno

“Up and down on one of the most beautiful roads in the world”.

My trip to Amalfi and Cilento begins on board an airplane to Naples. As soon as I glance at the Vesuvio volcano my heart starts to beat at the same well known frequency: the frequency of the South, a land so connected but so incredibly different from Northern Italy.

I strongly advice to rent a car directly at Naples Airport, or if you want to add this great city to your itinerary to do in the city centre.

Our road trip couldn’t start any better, on the SS163 road, also known worldwide as the Amalfi Drive, one of the most famous and scenic drives in the world.

Steal a good shot on the road it’s not easy – yet not impossible, and I advice to be very careful to the road so that you might be able to park somewhere and get great shots and views.

AMALFI

AMALFI-WHAT-TO-SEE-WHAT-TO-DO-2

Road 163 brings us directly to Amalfi, one of the wonders of the Riviera. Amalfi, today an UNESCO site, has a history as one of the most powerful italian maritime republics, but nowadays is a quiet beach village mostly living on tourism.

The first thing you will encounter in Amalfi will probably be the Duomo of Sant’Andrea Apostolo. This Cathedral is certainly worth a visit due to its beauty and interesting history. Get then lost in Amalfi’s alleys and small streets, where you can shop for souvenirs and fruits (in this region they have lemons the size of your head!) and buy a gelato of course! :)

During summertime Amalfi becomes a renown beach destination, so relaxing by the Mediterranean with a vintage swimming suite and oversized glasses is a total must :)

In the evening the seaside walk lights up with music and a lively atmosphere, where you can get a pizza or a drink by the sea. Among the many options I can advice the restaurant Ristorante Calajanara in Conca dei Marini. You will have to move the car to get there but the infinite terrace with a stunning view over the Med, the awesome food and the kindness of the staff won’t make you regret it!

RAVELLO

RAVELLO-48

Proceeding South you will get to Ravello, another picturesque village castled on the hilly coast from where you can enjoy a magnificent view.

Have a stroll in its streets covered in jasmine until you reach the main square, and finally reaching Villa Cimbrone, an ancient villa nowadays a luxury resort, where there’s the most charming terrace on heart :)

MAIORI

MAIORI-7A stop in the village of Maiori is a must when driving South. The charming atmosphere of this pretty little town will let you fall in love, and don’t forget to climb up to the Church of Colleggiata Santa Maria a Mare, to enjoy stunning views and get to know and see ancient legends and relics!

CETARA

CETARA-14

Cetara was probably the biggest surprise of this area: I’ve never heard of this town, yet it glowed with a postcard-like beauty.

This beach village offers many pretty corners to photograph and get lost into, and one of the things you can’t miss it’s the tasting of fresh tuna and anchovies, something the village is very renowned for.

Find the Restaurant Acquapazza, in corso Garibaldi 38, and get a granita on the beach after lunch 😉

PAESTUM

PAESTUM-1Leaving the Amalfi coast on your back, the Cilento coast awaits you with as many wonders, the first of which is probably Paestum also known as “Temple Valley”. This site, which is also part of of UNESCO sites’, dates back to the greek colonies of the 600 b.C., and it’s a must to see when in the area! Nearby you will find the Oleandri Resort, a very pretty resort where you can overnight, or simply grab a bite underway!

ACCIAROLI

ACCIAROLI-15

We arrived in Acciaroli in a golden afternoon, and I will never forget the warm atmosphere of this very welcoming village.

Getting lost in the small alleys discovering this village is one of the most warm memories of this trip :)

PALINURO

PALINURO-1

Palinuro was the last stop of our tour, and one of the most beautiful I have to say.

The things to do in this region are really many and fun: beside stunning views and long and pristine beaches, you have the blue caves, accessible by one of the many tour boats departing from the small harbor, and an incredible Nature Reserve which will leave you speechless, I promise! :)

In the evening Palinuro becomes lively with many bars and restaurants, and some cool clubs where yo can dance under the stars meters away from the sea.

If you want to try something typical (and you should!) I strongly advice the Restaurant Cantina del Marchese, in the nearby village of Marina di Camerota.

The thing I liked the most about Palinuro? I admit it, it was the infinity pool of the Grand Hotel San Pietro 😀

Have you ever visited the Amalfi and Cilento coasts?

What else do you advice to see and do?
