04 Jun SAILING THE CARIBBEAN WITH SAIL OASIS CHARTER Posted at 12:39h in Activities, Travel blog by Pamela Goding 2 Comments Share I will never forget the first time I saw Grenada. After 8 hours flying over the Atlantic I finally called land when rested my gaze on the island of Barbados. I landed in Grenada only late night. Everything was dark, but I could hear the sound of the frogs in the shadows, the winds brought tropical scents from the nearby rainforest and in the sky was glittering with so many stars like I’d never seen before. At the airport I met Julian, a real british captain and gentleman, and in the quiet of the night we cut throughout the dark water of St. Georges anchorage until we reached Oasis: an ocean 71 of 78 feet. My home for a month. The day after I woke up at the sound of waves and wind. I reached up to the cockpit still half sleeping, and I couldn’t believe the view I had before me. Landscapes so different from the ones I was used to, a vegetation so luxuriant and those pastel houses scattered between jungle and sea. This is how my adventure at the Caribbean started. I had joined Julian to help him out with the charters, and spent a fantastic month among some of the most beautiful islands on Earth. We had english tea in the morning and cheese cake at night. I made countless gin tonics for the guests, and cheered with as many rum punches. I met Neil, who runs a colored motorboat as if it was a motorbike, and runs the bbq at the beach at night. And shared the boat with Des, our cook -well, you didn’t expect me to cook, did you??- who works on charter boats all year around to send the money to her daughter studying in England. I washed my clothes in a bucket, in bikini, under the tropical sun, and then let them dry by the trade winds. During this month, I really understood how it means to live freely. Free from society constrictions, free from false needs, free from shoes. Land! Barbados looked like a mirage after 8 hours of ocean the first thing I saw on my first day at the Caribbean: Grenada coastline – and I remained speechless my cabin for a month can you imagine how it is to fall asleep in here cradled by the waves and glancing at the stars from the hatch? capt.
