HIKING SLOVENIA: ON TOP OF MOUNT SLAVNIK

To hike into nature is one of the most relaxing activities I know, and fall might just be the best season to do it: temperatures are perfect, days are still warm and long, and the colors are unbelievable.

We went discovering mount Slavnik lately, one of the most beautiful peaks in Slovenia, located just between Italy and Croatia, in the South of the country.

Reaching the top is possible even by car, although you will agree with me that doing it by feet or by bike is way better.

You can choose between a fair amount of different trails leading you to the top, we chose the one that goes from the unpronounceable village of Hrpelje, and it’s actually the one that you can do by car.

You can even decide to drive part of the trail and then proceed by feet or bike, as we did.

By doing so the length of the trail changes according to how much time you have on you and how long you feel like hiking.

In clear days you can enjoy a magnificent view over the gulf of Trieste and the Alps from the top of the peak, as well as the view over the croatian side.

On top there’s also a lodge, but to be honest we found it a little bit disappointing: we weren’t hoping to get lunch there, as when we reached the top was something like 4 pm, but at least a strudel would have been awesome! Instead, there were no food at all available at the lodge.

I advise you to bring with you something to eat, this way you can even picnic on the top, which is cheaper, and maybe even more pleasant!

In clear days you can glance at the gulf and the Alps after it.

We haven’t been that lucky, as the day was wonderful but a bit foggy on the horizon.

Mount Slavnik is 1.028 metres high, and lies approx 45 minutes from Trieste and Koper, and 1 hour and a half from Rijeka and Ljubljana.

My next challenge will be conquering the peak during winter time, as often it is covered in snow.
